(Electronic version of the letter sent by the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Vern Clark, and the Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Gordon England, thanking the Armed Forces Services Corporation for their assistance in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy)
Dear Mr. Snyder,
Please accept the sincere appreciation of the entire United States Navy for the extraordinary generous and untiring service the Armed Forces Services Corporation provided in the wake of the 11 September terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
From the initial dark hours through the difficult days and weeks that followed, you stood shoulder to shoulder with us united in the common purpose of ministering to the many needs of our grief-stricken families. The uncommon determination and professionalism universally displayed by the members of the Armed Forces Services Corporation made possible the Navy's recovery from the devastation of these events and are a testament to the true spirit and strength of your extraordinary organization.
The image of the Lone Sailor, that of a seagoing veteran standing ready for service in a faraway port, personifies the sacrifices, courage and commitment of Navy people past, present and future. On behalf of our Navy family, we present this Lone Sailor to the men and women of the Armed Forces Services Corporation as a lasting tribute to your valiant efforts and selfless dedication at a time crucial to our Navy and our Nation. History will long remember the common bonds we forged in the first battle of the war against terrorism.
With deepest gratitude,
//signed//
VERN CLARK
Admiral, U.S. Navy
Chief of Naval Operations

GORDON ENGLAND
Secretary of the Navy
