New Government Long Term Care Insurance Program

New Government Long Term Care Insurance Program

A new Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program was created by the Long Term Care Security Act (PL-106-265), and signed into law on September 19, 2000. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management sponsors this program. OPM selected John Hancock Life Insurance Company and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as the insurers for the Program. Open enrollment begins on July 1, 2002. John Hancock and MetLife formed Long Term Care Partners, LLC, a jointly owned entity devoted exclusively to operating the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program. The Program is likely to become the largest employer-sponsored, long-term care insurance program in the nation. Under law, approximately 20 million people, including Federal and Postal employees and annuitants, members and retired members of the uniformed services, and qualified family members, are eligible to apply for the insurance coverage. Premiums are lower than those generally available in the private market for comparable coverage.

For enrollment and rate information visit the web site at www.ltcfeds.com or call toll free 1-800-582-2337. Members may also contact AFSC for general counseling about long tem care insurance.
