Veterans Affairs Claims

Dealing with government agencies as large and complex as the Department of Veterans Affairs can be challenging. Many Veterans Service Organizations are in the business of trying to make it easier for veterans to apply for benefits. AFSC is a recognized Veterans Service Organization (VSO) and is happy to deal with the VA on behalf of our members.

AFSC's VA Specialist will assist you and/or your surviving family in preparing and submitting claims, review claims already submitted, and will track the progress on your claim. Additionally, if an appeal is warranted to a VA Claim Finding, AFSC's VA Specialist will assist in the appeals process and will provide Power of Attorney (POA) representation for the member, if requested.

Some tips to help smooth the claims process:

1. Be sure service medical records are up-to-date and contain evidence of treatment for chronic disabilities. The retirement or exit physical is particularly important. The examining doctor should note any and all conditions present at the time of separation from service.

2. Your claim should include all conditions that are chronic (that is, can be expected to continue in future years.) Do not clutter the claim with acute conditions that were treated and resolved with no residuals expected (such as colds), but remember: some chronic conditions can be non-symptomatic for a period of time.
